Many people have negative feelings when they hear the word micromanagement. In fact, there is a difference, since micromanagement can be good for your employees if you are a good manager, but awful if you are not. By definition, micromanagement is close monitoring and control of employees or subordinates.

In order to avoid  bad micromanagement that creates complications with the work process of your employees,  at first, you must learn the proper way to manage them.

First is to understand you are not there to make everyone scared of you. Learn how to communicate with your colleagues and do not forget each one will respond  to a different approach with a different reaction. You must learn how to use constructive criticism the way none of your employees will get offended. Do not yell, do not explain how stupid they are, but  show them the way they to fix their mistake.

When you micromanage your staff you must find the least disturbing way to check on their work. Many managers think that their work is about being arrogant know-it-all people who constantly check on the employee and have bad remarks, just to remind everybody of their existence. Wrong! The work of a manager is about controlling the work quality and providing the employees with solutions and directions.

If you have fixed your attitude, the next step is gaining control over the situation. There are many ways to manage the work progress, without disturbing anyone. Choosing the right employee work tracking software will help you to recognize and fix all issues in the work process.

Micromanagement is about trust between the employees and the manager. You must never be overly controlling and disrespectful, but helpful and respectable. If your employees do not trust you are like one of them, their productivity will be equal to their respect for you – 0. They must trust you will help them not ignore them. But that does not mean you are always to do their work or fix their mistake. You are there to give them direction and advice, not to run for the smallest issue. Set understandable boundaries between your job and theirs.

Never forget that you can’t do your work if you are burnout. This is why there are  boundaries. You can’t do everyone’s work. To be productive, you must have excellent time management skills and create executable schedules for all the projects you are working on, without constantly hovering over the shoulders of your staff.

If you constantly do that you employees will often quit or sabotage the work before that, just to give it back. None likes being constantly watched, give your employees the confidence they need and the opportunity to work calmly.

So in the end, to micromanage without causing insecurity and low productivity you have to control your employees from a respectable distance, have a good attitude, good time management skills and work tracking system at your disposal. After all your employees are not your enemies!
